Why you need the Claude desktop app, not the browser tab

Written by Kietah Martens-Shaw ·

Claude in a Chrome tab and Claude in the desktop app are not the same thing. They share a name and a login. Only one of them can reach your actual files, inbox and calendar.

If you have been using claude.ai in a browser and wondering why it can only talk about your work rather than do it, this is the reason.

The difference in one line

The browser version is a conversation. The desktop app is a workspace.

In a browser tab, Claude can only see what you paste into it. It has no route to your Mac, so every piece of context has to be copied in by hand and every result copied back out.

The desktop app runs on your machine. That is what makes it possible to connect it to your files, your Gmail, your Calendar and your Drive, and have it work inside them rather than describe them.

Every useful thing that follows depends on this one choice. Connect your email, let it read your documents, have it draft in your voice: none of it is available from a browser tab.

Installing it, start to finish

It takes about three minutes.

  1. Sign in to claude.ai in your browser. Claude offers the desktop app for download from there. If it does not download on its own, take the download link directly.
  2. Open the Claude.dmg file from your Downloads folder.
  3. Drag the Claude app into your Applications folder. This is the standard Mac install and it is the whole thing.
  4. Open Claude from Applications or Launchpad, and sign in with the account you just made.
  5. If macOS asks to allow Claude to find devices on your network, click Allow. This is normal and it appears on first launch.

That is the install. Nothing else is required at this stage.

The habit that matters more than the install

Installing the app is easy. Actually using it is the part people get wrong for weeks.

Once the desktop app is on your Mac, stop opening claude.ai in a browser tab. Not for quick questions, not for the small stuff. The browser tab is a different, weaker product with none of your context in it, and every time you use it you are starting from nothing.

Work in the desktop app, in the Code tab, every time. That is where the connections live, and it is where Claude builds up a picture of how your business actually works.

The people who get the most out of this use it daily rather than weekly, for small things as well as large ones, because the memory of your business compounds. A tool you open once a fortnight never gets good at being you.

What you can run at once

You are not limited to one conversation. You can run several Claude Code sessions side by side, working on different things at the same time, which is closer to how you would use a team than how you would use a chatbot.

That only makes sense once everything is connected, but it is worth knowing the ceiling is higher than one chat window.

What comes next

The install is Step 2 of thirteen. On its own, the desktop app is a better chat window and not much more. What changes things is what you connect to it afterwards: your Mac itself, then your email, calendar and files.

That is where it stops advising you and starts doing the work.
